Architecture in Frederiksberg

For those interested in architecture Frederiksberg offers a variety of building styles dating from the 17th century to the present.

Among the most important Pre-20th Century buildings are Frederiksberg Palace on Roskildevej constructed around 1700 and later rebuilt in an Italian Baroque style, Frederiksberg Church with its octagonal form built by architect Felix Dusart in 1734 in the Dutch style, and the Royal Danish Veterinary and Agricultural University from 1858, architect: M.G. Bindesbøll.

There are many fine examples of the functionalist style of the late 1920's to the 1940's. Among them are the 1930's duplexes on Emanuel Olsens Vej by Hans Dahlerup Bertelsen, the Novo (now: Novozymes) industrial building on Nordre Fasanvej from 1934 by Arne Jacobsen, and Radio Denmarks building on Rosenørns Allé from 1945 by Vilhelm Lauritzen.

Contemporary architecture can not least be seen in the central part of Frederiksberg around Frederiksberg Metro station. The shopping centre Frederiksberg Centret by KHR Arkitekter opened in 1996. The Copenhagen Business School building on Solbjerg Plads was built in 2000 by Vilh. Lauritzens Tegnestue, and in 2006 a new building "The Wedge" was taken into use by the Business School - architects: Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma. The new Frederiksberg High School and an extension to the Central Library both by Henning Larsens Tegnestue opened in 2004. And between these buildings exciting new squares are being constructed.

Outside the central part of Frederiksberg, Dalgas Have includes a department of Copenhagen Business School and residential buildings designed in the late 1980's by Henning Larsen, while Flintholm Station with its huge glass roof - by KHR Arkitekter - opened in 2004. Finally it must be mentioned that in 2008 the Zoo is constructed a new building for the elephants by Sir Norman Foster.

The above are just a selection of the architecturally interesting buildings in Frederiksberg. A special architecture route map (in Danish) for Frederiksberg can be found at the local libraries or here.
