Work-Based Learning Initiatives

Company internships, Jobs with wage subsidy and IGU (Integration Basic Education)

Content

Denmark offers several programs designed to help unemployed individuals gain work experience, develop skills, and transition into permanent employment.

The following three initiatives - company internships, jobs with wage subsidy, and Integration Basic Education (IGU) - provide different pathways depending on your background and employment goals. These programs combine practical work experience with skill development to strengthen your position in the Danish job market.

A company internship is an opportunity for unemployed individuals to clarify and develop their skills and job goals, bringing them closer to employment or education.

The internship can take place with both public and private employers.

During a company internship, you will work for a company while maintaining your unemployment benefits or social assistance, if you are already receiving unemployment benefits or social assistance. Typically, the internship lasts up to four weeks, but your job consultant can inform you if a longer period is possible.

A company internship can be a stepping stone to a new job. You will get to know the company, try out different roles, and acquire new skills. You can find an internship on your own, or you can seek advice from the Job Centre. Once you have found an internship, contact the Job Centre for assistance and approval of the internship.

Employment with wage subsidy is an offer for unemployed individuals to work for a limited period in a private or public company while receiving a salary from the employer. You will be paid a normal salary, and the company will get some of that salary amount reimbursed.

The length of time you can be working in a job with wage subsidy varies depending on your residence permit and whether it is a public or private employer.

The goal is to train and retrain your skills, and expand your network, which will make it easier for you to find a permanent job. There needs to be a learning goal agreed upon by you and the company during your job with wage subsidy.

Are you considering establishing employment with wage subsidy or you have agreed with an employer about a job with wage subsidy, the Job Centre can provide further assistance.

If you have status of refugee of family reunified, and have been in Denmark for less than 20 years, you might be eligible to get an IGU scheme.

IGU is short for Integrations Grunduddannelse (Integration Basic Education). IGU is a type of educational position for refugees and family reunified individuals who are between 18 and 50 years old and who have lived in Denmark for less than 20 years. The training programme also applies to people who have residence permits under the Special Acts for Ukraine or Afghanistan. The IGU training programme aims to make it easier for people who do not have much experience from Danish workplaces to enter the Danish job market. An IGU training programme lasts for 2 years and combines work and education. The educational part can include Danish language courses and other training relevant to the job, such as short qualification courses. An individual plan is made for the educational process.

The salary is lower than if you are employed in a regular position and corresponds to an apprentice salary. You work at least 25 hours a week on average. Your working hours and hours studying will make you reach 37 hours per week.

Frederiksberg Municipality has some IGU consultants, who work to find IGU positions and match them with IGU candidates. Tell your job consultant if you are interested in an IGU.

You can also make an agreement with an employer yourself that you would like to join IGU. Then the IGU consultant can help with all the formalities that need to be arranged around the IGU position.
