Danish Language Education
- when you are new in Denmark
As a resident in Denmark, you have the right to receive Danish language education to help you integrate into Danish society. This education is designed to provide you with the language skills necessary for daily life, work, and social interaction.
The following information outlines your entitlements to municipal Danish education, including the duration of your studies, associated costs, and any conditions that may apply based on your residence status.
Additionally, we present alternative ways to learn Danish, including supplementary courses and community-based learning opportunities. Whether you are just beginning your Danish language journey or looking to improve your existing skills, there are various pathways available to support your learning goals. Understanding these options will help you make informed decisions about your Danish language education and integration process.
When you come to Denmark as an adult, you are in most cases entitled to get free Danish language courses, financed by the municipality. It will be a part of your integration program. If your first address in Denmark is in Frederiksberg, you will be contacted by the municipality about this offer. If you have not heard from the municipality within a month from moving to Denmark, please do not hesitate to contact us.
There are 3 different levels of Danish Education (Danish Language 1, 2 and 3), each of them divided into a number of modules. The school will conduct an interview with you, to decide which Danish class and what module you will start at.
There are different language schools. If you receive benefits from the municipality, you will go to Speak, read more here. If you do not receive social benefits, you are free to choose any language school, as long as they have an agreement with the municipality where they are located. You can find the language schools here
You have right to attend Danish education for a maximum of 5 years or until you have finished the final module of your Danish Education. The 5 years start when you get the offer.
Depending on which residence permit you have, there might be a possibility to postpone starting Danish classes or taking a break under certain circumstances. You can contact Center for Integration, to find out what your options are.
The Danish education provided by the municipality is free for you. However, if you have come to Denmark to work, study or on other similar residence permits, you might have to pay a deposit of DKK 2.000, - before starting. You will get the deposit back, if you finish the modules on time.
FVU Danish: FVU courses are for you if you want to improve your reading and writing skills in Danish. You need to have a certain level of Danish before you can start FVU Danish. The school will assess your level. All FVU-courses are free of charge. FVU courses are offered both at language schools and at some other schools. Contact a language school to learn more.
Free online course for beginners: Dansk Her og Nu (Danish here and now) is a course for beginners, and can be taken for free by anyone, read more here.
Some organizations and libraries offer various “speak Danish cafés” where you can meet other people and practice speaking Danish. You can read more about the current offers in Frederiksberg Library on the library's website here.
